If the shoe (or dress) FITs: Couture Council luncheon honors Eco-designer Gabriela Hearst



NEW YORK ― Eco-design pioneer Gabriela Hearst was honored as a fashion innovator at the annual luncheon of the Couture Council of The Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology).

The event, considered the official kickoff to New York’s Fashion Week, took place Sept. 6 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center and benefits the only museum in New York dedicated exclusively to the art of fashion.

Lara Meiland-Shaw and Melissa Mafrige Mithoff, board chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Couture Council board, were chairwomen for the afternoon, which was highlighted by the presentation to Hearst of the 2023 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion.

Hearst, founder/creative director of her eponymous fashion brand and creative director of the luxury fashion house Chloé, was recognized for her dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibilty.

“Gabriela Hearst has positioned herself as an eco-conscious designer who believes creating aspirational sustainable fashion is possible, and she has achieved this with each collection,” said Joyce F. Brown, president of FIT.

“Her vision that a fashion brand can be successful while meeting social and environmental performance standards has been validated by the growth of Chloé under her creative leadership. The students at FIT are aspiring designers with a sustainability mindset and she is an inspiration to them. It is our honor to recognize her sustainability work and contribution to the world of fashion,” Brown said.

Past recipients of the award for include Maria Grazia Chiuri, Wes GordonChristian Laboutin, Narciso Rodriguez, Thom Browne, Akris’ Albert Kriemler,Manolo Blahnik, Carolina Herrera, FIT alum Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld, Dries Van Noten, Isabel Toledo, Alber Elbaz, and Ralph Rucci, also a FIT alum.
