Lyst: 2023 Fashion Trends Have ‘Chaotic Energy’

No-pants looks, courtroom fashion and more maternity fashion from Rihanna unexpectedly landed on fashion’s bingo card for 2023. They’re also among the most powerful fashion moments of the year, according to Lyst’s Year in Fashion report.

Based on global fashion searches, sales and social media metrics, the fashion shopping platform described a year in flux, with some consumers embracing escapist fashion and others leaning toward timeless staples. The result is an “eclectic mix that sums up the chaotic energy of the year,” said Katy Lubin, Lyst VP of brand and communications.

“Looking back to last year’s report, some forces remain strong; the luxury monobrands are still driving the global style agenda, with Miu Miu our brand of the year for the second year running,” she said. “K-Pop stars continue to influence fashion search, and celebrity fashion icons like Rihanna have secured trend-setter status that transcends seasonal vibe shifts. But amongst this year’s hype products and viral moments, the data also highlighted the power of fashion’s wearable, accessible new everyday heroes, from the Uniqlo bag to the Adidas Samba.”

Worn by Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, A$AP Rocky and Harry Styles, the retro Adidas sneaker is searched every 1.7 minutes on Lyst and has been worn with everything from cutoff shorts to denim’s looser jean fits. Limited-edition collaborations with Sporty & Rich, Pharrell Williams and Wales Bonner have elevated the Samba’s profile as well.

Retailing for under $20, Uniqlo’s half-moon shoulder bag captured the attention of consumers in 2024 in a rather traditional way. Lyst points out how the genderless bag went viral through word-of-mouth instead of an orchestrated influencer campaign which has become standard practice for brands.

On the opposite end of the price spectrum, consumers searched for luxury basics inspired by the stealth-wealth wardrobe from HBO’s “Succession.” Loro Piana baseball caps and Acne Studio sweatshirts saw growth earlier this year, while quiet luxury brands like Brunello Cucinelli and Zegna entered the mainstream, Lyst said.

Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow brought the high-end minimalist aesthetic to life during her two-week skiing accident trial in March. Paltrow’s simple yet elevated courtroom outfits by The Row, Celine and Loro Piana is Lyst’s “viral moment” of the year. Lyst said her wardrobe went viral on social media for “perfectly toeing the line between gimmicky, costume-like looks and cliché, privilege signaling courtroom attire.”

Other celebrities influenced fashion in 2023. Named Lyst’s “Fashion Couple,” Rihanna and A$AP Rocky flexed their combined style power on and off the red carpet in Dior, Maximilian, Loewe and Rick Owens. Along with their coordinated outfits, Lyst said the couple’s “newfound penchant” for Bottega Veneta has contributed to a 35 percent rise in demand for the brand since March.

“Power Dresser” of the year, Jennie, showed her style versatility in 2023. As a Chanel ambassador, the Blackpink singer wore a vintage Chanel dress to the Met Gala in May. The same month, she dropped a collection with Calvin Klein spanning jeans to underwear, leading to a 22 percent increase in searches for the PVH-owned brand on Lyst.

The fashion seen on stage captured the spotlight as well. With megastars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift filling stadiums around the world this summer, the “tourdrobe” became its own category in 2023 inspiring fans to DIY dupes of their stage looks. Searches for the Loewe crystal-embellished “hands” bodysuit that saw a lot of stage time during Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour increased 140 percent on Lyst. Her rhinestone tank and cut-off shorts by Miu Miu sent demand soaring 81 percent.

Along with rhinestone bodysuits, consumers have been searching for tiny bottoms to achieve the no-pants look popularized by Bella Hadid, Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Jennie. Searches for hot pants increased 133 percent year-over-year, Lyst said.

Searches for the gold sequin pair worn by actress Emma Corrin on Mui Miu’s Fall/Winter 2023 runway led to a 257 percent spike in searches for the brand, helping it nab Lyst’s “Brand of the Year” title for a consecutive year. Miu Miu’s “librarian core” aesthetic and viral products, coupled with celebrity-packed runway moments made it a “blockbuster year” for the Italian label, Lyst stated.
